Day 3 ~ Portrait Photography

According to photographytips.com:

WHAT IS A PORTRAIT?

A portrait is defined as a likeness of a person, especially of the person’s face. Simply that. But, the word in general use has deeper connotations. A photographic portrait is understood to be a good quality image that not only captures a person’s physical likeness on film or on a digital camera's sensor, but also something of the person’s character, generally in a manner that is attractive and pleasing to the subject.

CHARACTER REVELATION

A good portrait will contain at least one element that reveals the subject’s personality, attitude, unique mannerisms or any of the other features or traits that form the individual nature of the person. It will tell us something about the subject. You may have heard someone remark that a particular photographer “really captured” their father or child, for example, in a picture. They are referring in part to the image being a true physical likeness, but what they are really saying is that the image also reveals a significant, identifiable part of the subject’s character. The portrait photographer who has never previously met the subject therefore has quite a challenge.

ASSIGNMENT: Search online for a photographic portrait, one that you feel evokes the personality and attitude of the person in the portrait. Copy & paste the portrait into your OWN post. Title your post with 1 word that describes the person in the portrait. Your title MUST also contain your first & last name. I will do the first one as an example. When you have completed the assignment, you are to look at all of the portrait posts. You are required to comment on at least one of the other posts.

Day 2 ~ Double Bubble Map

Click on the link above to print out a copy of a Double Bubble Map. You will use the Double Bubble Map to compare and contrast yourself, living in the present, to the main character of "The Seer of Shadows" Horace Carpetine, living in the past in 1872 in New York City. After completing the paper, hand it in.

Day 1 ~ The Seer of Shadows

Now that you have read "The Seer of Shadows" by Avi, choose one of the questions below to answer. Once you have decided on a question, click on comment at the bottom of the post. Copy & paste the question into the comment box, then answer. Your answer must be detailed, explaining your thoughts and the reasons for them. After you answer a question, you are required to respond to at least one other student's answer. Share your thoughts on whether you agree with them or not, explaining your reasons.

1. Do you believe in ghosts? Do you think there are people who can see ghosts? Horace’s
initial disbelief in ghosts comes from his parents. Explain where your beliefs come
from.

2. Horace and his father consider photography to be a science. They see photographs as
factual. Do you agree? Why or why not?

3. What is the difference between science and religion? Can a person believe in both?

4. Horace decides he has to take the secret pictures Mr. Middleditch asks him to take.
Why? How do you think you would handle a situation like this one?

5. Horace has a very different relationship with Pegg than the Von Machts or Mr.
Middleditch do. Why? What makes people think differently about the same person?

6. What happens to Mr. Von Macht? How do you know?

7. Throughout the novel the author uses foreshadowing—he suggests that something is
going to happen before it happens. How did this make you feel as you read?

8. What do you imagine happens to Eleanora after the end of the story?
